Barnwood
Barnwood has been one of my favorite experiences as an artist and attendee. The exhibition happens at a barn in Ulster Park, New York and contains plenty of wood!
Hosted by Pink Stallion and managed by Stephan Hengst, I’ve been such a fan and was thrilled to have my work accepted in the show. The Barnwood 2021 Series includes ten pieces (all produced in a super short time) and were among a fantastic display of queer and erotic artists. One of the local journals featured the event and if you look close, you can see the series in the background!
Barnwood’s main theme is the celebration of the male form in bare or graphic depiction and the show seeks to accomplish two things: promote the talents of artists form local and beyond the state and works made more available to the public. This gave me an idea of what kind of audience to focus my art and an opportunity to meet others with similar passions in queer, erotic and humanizing creations.
The works and artistry display a keen perspective of sensuality and sex, intermixed with humility and love, appreciation for queerness and connection, not just the penetration. In a more humble manner that shows more love and appreciation towards the male form, I was in awe at how people could take body parts and usual pleasures to focus on a loving view with composition, colors, and storytelling that come through from an artist’s eyes.
The show itself was so fun and exciting. To be surrounded by homoerotic works and immersed in the variety of styles, mediums, content, and ideas inspired some future ideas. One of my favorite pieces at the show was titled Ulysses at the Bar (IG: @totallywiredsculpture) and was this wire sculpture that connected wood to form a top heavy, shirtless man holding a drink. Another delight featured body painter Andres San Millan (IG: @andres_san_millan) and myself as a volunteer canvas to expand on the Barnwood theme. Looking forward to the next Barnwood!
